Dr. Breána D. Johnson PhD, LMFT is a licensed mental health practitioner, clinical scholar and small-business entrepreneur with over a decade of study in the field of psychology and marginalized mental health. Breána is a proud HBCU graduate and began her studies in psychology and human development at Howard University. She studied systems-based mental health at Hofstra University and graduated with a Master of Arts degree in marriage and family therapy in 2016.

Breána completed her doctoral degree in 2025 after completing her scholarly work on Black American women's mental health and professional and domestic labor. She holds a doctorate in Depth Psychology, specializing in Community, Indigenous, Liberation and Eco Psychologies. Breána specializes in marginalized mental health with a focus on labor exploitation in the United States. In addition to her private practice, Breána serves as an academic professor, teaching and training clinicians at the graduate level.

Breána's work explores the management of mental health while navigating modern Western systems, structures and society. Her methods aim to deconstruct narrative schemas and belief systems rooted in hyper productivity, individualism, perfectionism and idealistic success among other phenomena that undermine wellness, fulfillment and the pursuit of happiness.


Scope of Practice and Specialties

Women's Mental Health

Breána ’s scope of practice focuses on women’s issues including but not limited to, self-care and mental health hygiene, mindfulness practice building, recovery from traumatic relationships, addressing burn out syndrome and imposter phenomena among high achieving women. Breána enjoys supporting clients throughout the life course as they develop into new roles and identities throughout their womanhood journey.
Breána is opening her practice to deeply explore sex and romance-based topics, specifically but not limited to kink, non-monogamous and polyamorous lifestyles. Breána aims to normalize pleasure, desire, eroticism as inherent to human functioning and uses the therapeutic space as vehicle for destigmatizing sex education and exploration. Individuals, couples & throuples are welcome!

Marginalized Mental Health

Breána is intentional about providing safe spaces for communities historically marginalized from receiving professional mental health care. In her work, clients are able to confront biases about mental health and the realities of navigating structural barriers in various aspects of their lived experience. Clients may explore identity development while building mental, emotional and relational skills for building a resilient and authentic life.

Psychoeducation Consulting

Dr. J cultivates and facilitates workshop experiences for groups and organizations interested in providing psychoeducation for their partners and/or employees. Specializing in professional women's mental health and labor, Breána works with groups and organizations interested in cultivating mental health informed culture and safe spaces for women in leadership. Workshop topics include (not limited to) understanding burn-out, maladaptive perfectionism, hyper-productivity and cultivating cultures of care and wellness in the workplace.
